Abu Dhabi, 05/03/2017: Eagle Hills, an Abu Dhabi-based private real estate investment and development company, is collaborating with The Dive Centre and Project AWARE® on a beach and marine clean-up at its first development in the UAE The Address Fujairah Resort + Spa, on March 10th. Interested residents across the UAE are given the opportunity to take part in this event, providing them with a chance to play a key role in preserving the marine life of Fujairah shores.

During Cityscape Abu Dhabi last year, Eagle Hills announced the launch of The Address Fujairah Resort + Spa at Sharm in Fujairah, which is about 3 kilometres south of existing resorts at Al Aqah beach, and 21 kilometres south of Dibba Al Fujairah. The project is currently underway marine and grading works and thus as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, Eagle Hills is focusing its efforts to maintain the environmental wellbeing of the location of its first development in the UAE.

The event will include both a beach clean-up, which doesn’t require diving skills, and a Dive Against Debris® survey underwater. Divers will work in teams to clear sections of the 500m long beachfront, after which all debris found will be recorded and submitted to Project AWARE®. Divers and volunteers from across the UAE are encouraged to take part in the beach and marine clean-up which will take place on The Address Fujairah Resort + Spa site on March 10 at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in volunteering can register via e-mail on info@thedivecentre.ae,. Upon registration, volunteers will receive all information and documentation needed.

Commenting on the upcoming event, Low Ping, CEO of Eagle Hills, said: “The beach and marine clean-up at our development site for The Address Fujairah Resort + Spa is a collaborative initiative that we are very proud to take part in. Fujairah is a rising tourist attraction for residents and visitors with the Hajar Mountains stretching around it and the Gulf of Oman at its waterfront, and our latest development highlights our desire to play a key role in placing the emirate on the global map.”

“Our first collaboration with The Dive Centre and Project AWARE® is the beginning of more to come, highlighting our utmost commitment to the wellbeing of the communities we operate within. Marine life is embedded in the UAE’s culture and as an Abu Dhabi-based company we equally cherish it and aim to raise awareness around the subject,” Low Ping added.

“At The Dive Centre we not only wish to teach diving, we strive to increase environmental awareness, conservation education and act on our responsibility we have as ocean enthusiasts. It is extremely exciting to see the United Arab Emirates evolving into a country that is acting on wildlife and marine conservation. Events such as this clean up, provide a brighter future as companies take an increasing interest in environmental responsibility,” said Nicola Liddell, PADI Master Instructor and General Manager of The Dive Centre.

“More than 30,000 divers have taken part in over 2,500 Dive Against Debris® surveys in more than 50 countries around the world since Project AWARE®’s citizen science programme launched in 2011,” commented Domino Albert, Project AWARE® Communications Manager. “We’re thrilled to take action with The Dive Centre and Eagle Hills to encourage and empower the Fujairah community to think globally and act locally by contributing to a worldwide initiative aimed at keeping the ocean clean and healthy,” she added.

Every year tens of thousands of marine animals and seabirds are lost from eating or getting tangled up in marine debris. Research has shown that marine debris affects 817 different marine species. All known sea turtle species, over half marine mammal species and almost two thirds of all seabird species have ingested or become entangled in marine debris. Through the commitment of the volunteers, Eagle Hills, The Dive Centre and Project AWARE® aim to maintain the environmental wellbeing of Fujairah’s marine life.
